Cow and Newborn Calf 15 July, 2009   3 comments

I have had encounters with cows and their calves before but never one quite like today. We were privileged to be able to spend 1 and 1/2 hours with this newborn calf and it’s mum. Crew on Spirit can only guess but from looking at the colour of this calf, the size and its behaviour, it is estimated the calf could be as young as 1 day to 3 or 4 days old.

Mother and calf were moving in a northerly direction staying close to the surface most of the time. On one occasion the calf appeared to be on it’s own and responded to the crew and passengers of Spirit cheering it on. It was the cutest thing I have ever seen, watching this little whale lift its head out of the water to see where all the noise was coming from.

That wasn’t enough though, it then proceeded to roll on its back  lifting its pectoral fins in the air.

One of my photo’s even catches a glimpse of its eye as the young calf lays on its back.

Another one of those very memorable days.
