Whales September 11   Leave a comment

Wow, what a day we had today. Nine miles off the coast and blows to be seen everywhere. The whales are heading in a southerly direction now, back to Antarctica for the Summer. Todays pod of 5 whales, most probably a pod of 2 and a pod of 3 coming together for a time, put on a wonderful display. My first shot for the day was a breech, that to me was a sign of what was coming. The whales were extremely curious and swam under, around, in front and beside Spirit. They spy hopped in front of the boat, checking out each and every passenger. I wonder what is going through their heads when they see all these foreign bodies waving and screaming in excitement. It is the most awesome experience to see a creature so large and so graceful heading straight towards the boat and just as he is about to hit, dives deep below and under the boat, coming out on the other side. That magnificent irridescant colour and the sound of a whale trumpeting at the top of his lungs leaves me covered in goosebumps. What amazing animals.
With all this activity, I can’t sit at home and wonder what I am missing, so tomorrow I will head out again. One of these days, the calves and their mums are going to start passing our shores.
