Whales 5th August, 2008   Leave a comment

Today’s conditions for whale watching aboard Spirit of Gold Coast couldn’t have been any better. It was like a warm summers day, no wind, calm seas and although not a lot of whales to be found, what was found was within 30 minutes of being on the boat and only 3 1/2 miles out to sea.
We came across 2 whales that appeared to be sleeping on the surface of the water. Every now and then they would slip below the surface, just enough so we knew they were still there. When they came back to the surface, they would let us know with a stream of water and vapour that is blown from their blow hole. After some very quiet time with these two whales, they did exactly what our skipper had hoped, they woke up and hurled themselves up through the surface of the water a number of times. This is commonly known as breeching.
